The valleys of South Wales reverberated to the sound of rally cars contesting a BTRDA round for the first time for a number of years when the Red Dragon Rally took place at the end of May. The event, new to the Series this season, consisted of five stages and was won by former Silver Star champion Andy Burton in his Peugeot Cosworth. Top BTRDA points scorer was Ian Joel (Escort Cosworth) but it is Simon Crook (Sierra Cosworth) who still heads the Clear System Solutions table. He is two points ahead of Peter Woodhead (Mitsubishi Lancer), with Joel third.
In the Peugeot Sport Gold Star Championship, Martin Meadows (Proton Compact) has built up a very healthy lead over Phil Morgan (Peugeot 306S16) but, nevertheless, the pair of them should be keeping an eye open for Nik Elsmore (Nissan Sunny). The son of former Ford and British Leyland works driver Graham has only contested three rounds of the championship so far - and scored maximums on each occasion!...
The 'Two-Wheel Drive Challenge' is being dominated by Simon Rogers (Ford Escort) and Jon Ballinger (Opel Manta) - the latter already with three maximums to his name - as they fight for the £500 end-of-season award. As the Chsmpionship progresses, and dropped scores come into effect, it is the likes of Elsmore and Ballinger who should gain significantly.
The next round of the BTRDA Rally Series is the Sutton Auto Factors Dukeries Rally on Saturday 19th June (Contact: Joanne Smith - Tel: 01623 480410) but regulations are now also available for Round 8 of the BTRDA Rally Series - the Quinton Stages Rally, which takes place on Saturday 24th July, from the Entries Secretary: Bob Cross - Tel: 01922 682658. The rally is based in Llandrindod Wells and the route contains six special stages, totalling 45 miles, in such well-known forests as Crychan and Brechfa.
Please be aware that there is a revised Clear System Solutions door sticker which all Silver Star competitors should now be displaying. They are freely available and should be fitted prior to the start of your next event.
It also appears that in some cases that, in some cases, these are not being displayed as laid out in the Series regulations - please ensure that they are affixed in the manner described, as failure to do so could result in loss of Championship points - and what do points make?
Don't forget that anyone starting eight, or more, events in the Championship automatically becomes eligible for a sports shirt similar to those modelled(!) by many of the 1997/98 Silver Star competitors.
Andrew Large, the BTRDA Rallies Committe Safety Representative, has brought a couple of new publications to out attenbtion that have been produced by the Motorsport Safety Fund. A Pocket Guide to Marshalling and A Pocket Guide to Rescue and Resuscitation both make interesting reading and are available from: The Motorsport Safety Fund, PO Box 239, West Malling, Kent, ME19 4BL.
The winners on the Red Dragon Rally each receive a set of Mintex competition brake pads supplied by Alan Brown @ Questmead (Tel: 01706 860088) who attends all BTRDA events.
