BTRDA Rally Series 2000

Competitors Bulletin No 3 - March 2000

Congratulations to Michael Watson (Clear System Solutions Silver Star) and Nigel Wakefield (Peugeot Sport Gold Star) on their maximum scores on the Malcolm Wilson Rally. The second round of this year's BTRDA Rally Series thrust these two into the spotlight after both having problems on the Wyedean last month. As you will see from the enclosed points tables, Pete Littler currently leads the Silver Star Championship after two second places in his Escort Cosworth, whilst Sandy Smith maintains a one-point advantage over Charlie Exton in the battle for Gold Star honours.

The Malcolm Wilson Rally was celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary and the thirteenth consecutive year of sponsorship from 'Le Patron'. Scrutineering took place at the new M-Sport premises at Dovenby and, at the subsequent Awards Ceremony, Malcolm not only confirmed his continued support of the event into 2001, but also indicated that the Ford World Rally Championship Team headquarters may feature more prominently in the pre and post rally formalities. By the time you read this bulletin, if you haven't got your entry in for the North Humberside Forest Rally - tut, tut! You'd better speak to Alan Carvell - Tel: 01482 840756 p.d.q!

Next on the agenda is the Gliddons Somerset Stages Rally. As you may have read in the press, the organisers' plans to run the event over two days have been thwarted and it will now take place on Saturday 15th April. Minehead is the base and George Mullins - Tel: 01749 673503 - is the Entries Secretary. The organisers are keen to stress that, thanks to the uncovering of some smooth forestry mileage, they have been able to dispense with the less well graded sections this time.

Regulations for the TLS Plains Rally, on Saturday 6th May will be available shortly and will be sent automatically to all registered BTRDA crews. Based in Newtown, the Plains offers four stages, totalling 45 miles, in Dyfnant, Dovey, Gartheiniog and one more which is new to the event. The Entries Secretary is Alan Smith - Tel: 01204 840664.

Excessive Noise - yes, that could mean you! This is an issue which is causing increasing concern and involves the high-intensity explosions emanating from a few turbo-charged cars. Unfortunately, the individual crews may not be aware of the distress they are causing because their crash helmets will eliminate much of the sound which can be very painful, as several stage start marshals have found out to their cost. Each event appoints an Environmental Scrutineer, with Judge of Fact status, who can report any such 'instantaneous factual occurrences' to the Clerk of the Course. He/she the has recourse to the MSA Blue Book, Article K31m and K31s, to apply the necessary penalties. So, if you have a turbo-charged car, it is in your own interest to ensure that the engine management system is functioning correctly.

Clear System Solutions Team Challenge - there are now twelve 3-car teams registered for this new initiative which is FREE to enter and, with a total of £2000 to be won at the end of the season, is strongly recommended. The current leaders are Sandy Smith, Martin Healer & Rob Davies who call themselves Oh Dear! - a rather inappropriate name considering their present exalted position. Further details from Messrs Wilcock & Bull.

Dunlop Two-Wheel Drive Challenge - this is once again proving very popular with 27 drivers on the books. Following the Malcolm Wilson Rally, Andy Madge holds the upper hand with Mark Constantine in close attendance. Jon Ballinger, where are you? ...
