The Willingham's Recovery North Humberside Forest Rally, which is taking place on Saturday 27th March, is the third round of the Dunlop Gold Star Rally Championship and third place on both the first two rounds of the series have been sufficient for GRAHAM MIDDLETON to take maximum scores on both occasions.
The mid Wales driver (Hyundai Accent World Rally Car) will leave the start, at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Willerby, on the Saturday morning behind local hero WARREN PHILLISKIRK (MG Metro 6R4) who won the rally in 1997, 1999, 2000 & 2002 (Foot & Mouth Disease prevented the event taking place in 2001). Adding still further to the variety is STEVE PEREZ whose Ford Focus World Rally Car carries sponsorship from his own 'Vodka Kick' drinks concern.
A full entry list is available here but the organisers, North Humberside Motor Club Ltd, have attracted an almost capacity entry of 175 cars to the event which is a qualifying round of several major Championships in addition to the Dunlop Gold Star. The Silver Star Championship, also sponsored by Dunlop, caters purely for two-wheel drive cars and this is currently a Ford Escort RS benefit! ROBIN BRADBURY, PHIL SQUIRES & ROBERT ARCHER will all be present in their ageing - but extremely quick! - machines, while the front-wheel drive contingent is led by STUART JONES (Proton Satria), WILL ONIONS (Ford Escort RS2000 'kit car') and ROBIN BOLT (Peugeot 206).
A feature of the series for the past few years has been the Silkolene 1400 Championship. Cars contesting this particular section run at the front of the field and, consequently, the honour of actually being the first car away from the start falls to the Suzuki Ignis of IAN EVANS. With two maximum scores to his credit already, Evans leads the Silkolene Championship but has, thus far, been unable to shake off the attentions of MALCOLM HAGUE (Ford Escort) who has finished second both times.
Having really captured the rallying world's imagination since its inception, the 1400 Championship is responsible for the first 48 cars in the entry, including half a dozen MG ZRs whose novice drivers are using the event as a shakedown prior to a season primarily in the British Rally Championship. The wide range of eligible vehicles on show is testament to the popularity of competition at this level.
A number of regional Championships - the Competition Car Insurance EMAMC, the Roadrunner Phoenix Awards ANEMMC & the Kent Cams ANCC Northern Stage Rally Championships - have included the North Humberside Forest Rally in their calendars and, consequently, there will be furious battles unfolding throughout the whole entry to which spectators will bear witness at first hand! Spectator Information is available here and anyone intending to watch the proceedings is asked to stick to the dedicated viewing points.
From the start, the route takes competitors out to Scarborough, and a trip around the motorcycle race track at Oliver's Mount, before heading on to the gravel tracks of the North York Moors where the meat of the event is to be found. 44 miles of special stages must be completed before the final run back to the finish in Willerby.
