The entry list for the Willingham's Recovery North Humberside Forest Rally, which takes place on Saturday 27th March, has long since topped the 100-mark and is heading inexorably towards the maximum of 180. Included in that number is a Hyundai Accent World Rally Car driven by Ripon farmer Charlie Payne who is no stranger to the special stages on the North York Moors which form the meat of the event.
Co-driven by motorsport travel agent Craig Thorley (York), Payne is one of several drivers who will take the start at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Willerby, on the outskirts of Hull, on 27th of this month in World Rally Cars. In addition to Payne, the organisers - North Humberside Motor Club Ltd - are expecting a second Hyundai Accent in the hands of former National Rally Champion Graham Middleton (Llandrindod Wells) and have already received entries from Brian Bell (Skegness) and Steve Perez (Chesterfield), both of whom have privately-entered Ford Focus WRCs for their 2004 campaigns. Ex factory Subaru Imprezas are represented by Damian Cole (Abergavenny) and Arwyn Williams (Sutton Coldfield), while Ian Joel (Carnforth) will be appearing in his Ford Escort WRC.
2003 winner, Andy Burton, went on to take the Dunlop Gold Star Rally Championship, of which North Humberside is the third qualifying round, in fine style. However, he has declared his intention not to defend his title, moving on instead to the Kumho National Rally Championship this year. Consequently with Warren Philliskirk, who won the rally in 2002/2000/1999/1997, not currently competing, it is highly likely that there will be a new name on the trophy this year.
